Nature-based Solutions

WHAT ARE NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS?

Nature-based solutions (NBS) use natural processes to tackle environmental, societal, andeconomic challenges. By integrating biodiversity-friendly interventions into urban landscapes, NBS can restore ecosystems, improve resilience to climate change, and enhance humanwell-being.

In cities, NBS can take many forms, from green roofs and pollinator-friendly gardens to urban wetlands and solitary bee hotels. These interventions work with nature to create sustainable, thriving urban environments.

WHY DO CITIES NEED NBS?

As urban areas expand, they often replace natural habitats with concrete and steel, reducing biodiversity and ecosystem services. NBS provide a solution by bringing nature back into the city, offering benefits such as:

  • Restoring Biodiversity: Supporting native species and pollinators like solitary bees.

  • Climate Resilience: Absorbing excess rainwater, reducing urban heat, and improving air quality.

  • Human Well-being: Creating green spaces that improve mental health and strengthen communities.

  • Sustainable Cities: Providing cost-effective, nature-based alternatives to traditional infrastructure.

UrbanBEE AND NBS: A SCALABLE SOLUTION

UrbanBEE integrates nature-based solutions through citizen science, focusing on one keyintervention: solitary bee hotels. These simple, small-scale structures provide nestinghabitats for native pollinators, helping to:

  • Increase pollinator populations and restore urban biodiversity.

  • Engage communities by giving people a role in conservation.

  • Generate scientific data to inform urban sustainability strategies.

Unlike large-scale urban greening projects, bee hotels are highly scalable and adaptable, making them ideal for cities in both the Global North and South.

UrbanBEE's research explores how small-scale, community-driven NBS can be scaled across diverse urban environments. We aim to answer key questions, such as:

  • How effective are bee hotels as an urban biodiversity intervention?

  • How do different socio-ecological contexts affect NBS success?

  • How can community participation enhance conservation efforts?

Through our multi-city approach, we are testing these ideas in real-world settings, contributing to a global understanding of nature-based solutions in urban areas.

HOW IS UrbanBEE USING NBS TO TRANSFORM CITIES?

THE BIGGER PICTURE: NBS IN POLICY & URBAN PLANNING

As cities look for ways to meet biodiversity and climate targets, nature-based solutions are increasingly recognised as a key part of sustainable urban planning. UrbanBEE contributes to this conversation by:

  • Providing scientific evidence on the effectiveness of bee hotels as an NBS.

  • Engaging policymakers in discussions about scalable biodiversity interventions.

  • Offering an open-source model for integrating citizen science into urban ecology research.
